Position Summary(Basic Job Function)
This is an on-call position. Provides assistance during non-academic theater and stage presentations as a carpenter, property person, electrician, moving picture machine operator, grip, lamp operator, rigger and/or related theater and stage functions.
Unit Position Summary
All stage crew labor working on Michigan State University at the Wharton Center for Performing Arts and Breslin Student Event Center are referred for jobs by I.A.T.S.E. Local 274. (International Alliance Theatrical Stage Employees, Local 274; A Labor Union organization affiliated with AFL/CIO, which holds a bargaining agreement with Michigan State University).
Applicants accepted to the position will be placed upon a CALL LIST managed by IATSE Local 274.
The CALL LIST is a procedure for placing stagehands on jobs as they are submitted to the local from different facilities based on the facility event needs.
Working the stagehand call list is on-call/at will. There is no guarantee of hours, no set schedule. To successfully get placement on the call list, your schedule needs flexibility, so you can accept a stage call when offered to you. If the call steward calls to place you on a work call, and you are unavailable to accept the call, you may be moved down the list. There are approximately 250-300 stagehands in the Mid-Michigan area servicing different events at different times in a variety of venues.
Skills: On-call stagehand is a physical job. Successful applicants will be capable of long hours on their feet, walking, climbing stairs, working on ladders, in catwalks. Heavy lifting, pushing and pulling are required on stage calls. Additionally crew will come and go between indoors and outdoors for unloading or loading of production vehicles. Crew need to dress appropriately for the weather. Work shifts may be scheduled for any time of the day or night.
Knowledge and experience with: Theatrical lighting, audio, carpentry, video, rigging, wardrobe, and hair are all a plus; but not mandatory for all positions. Successful candidates will be placed upon the call list with skill sets noted.
Applicants must be at least 18 years of age.
Applicants must have reliable transportation to get to and from jobs.
