Protection and Controls Engineer
EVS, Inc. is seeking a Protection and Controls Engineer to join our Solar team. The Engineer will have knowledge and experience in all aspects of electrical power distribution systems – especially substation protection and control – to support/lead system design and study projects for a busy electrical engineering consulting firm.
Be responsible for design, specifications, plans, maps, project schedule and budgets
Review work for Quality Assurance and Quality Control and ensure compliance with EVS quality standards
Be responsible for contracts, scope of services, and budgets
Participate in and facilitate meetings with stakeholders and clients
Instruct, train and mentor group members
Work with the Director of substation and Power studies group to assess workload, capacity and hiring needs
Develop substation relay programming development.
Serve as the subject matter expert on substation protection and control projects.
Perform technical analyses and prepare the following new documentation or modify existing documentation:
One-line and three-line diagrams
AC & DC schematics
Bill of materials
Relay panel layout and wiring drawings
Conduit and circuit lists
Protective relay settings
NERC compliance program evidence
Technical support for field personnel
Provide support for power systems engineering studies, including arc flash and harmonics.
Document power systems (e.g., compile equipment ratings and settings).
Provide support for new construction and retrofit electrical system design projects.
Assist with new-project cost estimation and proposal preparation, as necessary.
Assist with project planning, coordination, and supervision, as necessary.
Creating electrical collection system and substation one-line diagrams
Creating electrical Medium voltage conductor sizing and design
Determining wire spacing in trenches using software like AmpCalc or CYMCAP
Gaining knowledge of PV system components like modules, racking, inverters, transformers and BOS.
Assist in completing general power systems studies, including short circuit, protective device coordination, and grounding.
Possessing a good understanding of NEC 2020 and IEEE and keeping up with emerging technologies
Reviewing shop drawings, responding to request for information (RFIs) and assisting with general construction support services
Must be passionate about the renewable energy business, hardworking and thrive in the fast pace of a new department with tremendous growth potential in a stable Engineering firm. In addition, the Power Electrical Engineer must possess:
Excellent work ethic: thorough, accurate, and quality conscious in the performance of job duties.
Ability to work within scheduling and costs constraints to complete projects on time and on budget.
Detailed knowledge of overcurrent, differential and motor protection calculations, and coordination.
Broad background in protective relays by SEL, Siemens, GE, and others; solid experience configuring these devices for both protection and SCADA.
Practical experience with SKM, ETAP, SEL Ascelerator, and other electrical analysis software.
Working knowledge of AutoCAD, Excel, and Word.
Good writing skills (for writing study reports and preparing client correspondence).
Must have a customer service mindset.
Power systems or utility-related experience is required
Understanding of engineering and renewable energy systems
Knowledge of WinIGS, CDEGS or equivalent software to run Grounding studies
Knowledge of Coordination, Short Circuit and Arc Flash studies in E-tap or SKM
Background in electrical engineering with project experience in medium and high Voltage AC
Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering from accredited university or college.
5-6 years of experience in Electrical Engineering.
