UPMC Hamot, located in Erie, PA, is hiring multiple Temporary Professional Staff Nurses to help support our Resource Unit during this unprecedented time. Schedule flexibility is needed.

As a Temporary Professional Staff Nurse, you’ll provide highly competent patient care and treatment while demonstrating empathy and a passion for learning. A role that requires independent judgment, fluent communication, and candid partnership, the Professional Staff Nurse establishes relationships with physicians, other care providers, patients, and patients’ families to achieve desired patient outcomes throughout the continuum of care. As a member of the care delivery team, you will set the standards for the level and quality of nursing care and possess authority and accountability for its provision. At all times, you will exemplify a commitment to the community and to the nursing profession.

Temporary assignments last up to 180 days but can lead to ongoing employment.

As a member of the Resource Pool, you’ll be eligible for a competitive rate of pay. Minimum starting rate is $24.95. Paid training will be provided as needed.

All positions will require successful completion of a criminal background check, any required clearances, and a pre-employment physical and drug screen as part of UPMC’s standard hiring process. If your academic institution has these documents on record, your onboarding may be expedited.

Responsibilities :

  • Applies the nursing processwithin the framework of Relationship Based Care to create a healingenvironment.

  • Formulates daily goals and aplan of care for patients that involves the patient as partner andconsiders the individual needs of the patient in a holistic manner.

  • Demonstrates criticalthinking in the identification of clinical, social, safety, psychologicaland spiritual issues for the patient care within an episode of care.

  • Practices solidcommunication skills and is able to articulate and translate the patient'scondition to other care providers and to negotiate and makerecommendations for changes in patient care and unit practices.

  • Patient documentation iscomprehensive and promotes communication between caregivers.

  • Incorporates nationalprofessional organization as well as business unit and health system'sgoals to improve patient safety, quality and satisfaction.

  • Creates a caring andcompassionate patient focused experience by building healing relationshipswith patients, families and colleagues.

  • Demonstrates accountabilityfor professional development that improves the quality of professionalpractice and the quality of patient care.

  • Actively participates inunit-based shared governance, goal setting and supports the change andtransition process to improve quality of care and the practiceenvironment.

  • Serves as a highly engagedand full partner on the care team and responds willingly to care teammember needs for assistance and partnership.

  • Participates in work thatimproves patient care and the professional practice environment.

  • Adapts to change anddemonstrates flexibility with the change process.

  • Actively participates indepartment or unit-specific quality improvement efforts.

  • Utilizes research andevidence-based practice to support improvement in clinical care identifiesresearch issues or articles related to clinical specialty or areas ofinterest, discusses opportunities for quality improvement at multidisciplinaryrounds, and influences patients' plans of care.



  • Registered Nurse

  • Minimum six monthsexperience

  • Nursing instructors who havecompleted clinical orientation to UPMC Hamot strongly preferred

  • The individual must be able todemonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care and/orinteract appropriately to the ages of the patients served by his/herassigned unit as specified below.

  • They must also demonstrateknowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life spanand possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patients statusand interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patientsrequirements relative to his/her age-specific needs and to provide thecare needs as described in the department policy and procedures.

  • Ability to establish andmaintain positive, caring relationships with executives, managers,physicians, non-physician providers, ancillary and support staff, otherdepartments, and patients/families.

  • Ability to work productivelyand effectively within a complex environment, handle multiple/changingpriorities and specialized equipment.

  • Good clinical judgment withcritical thinking, analytical and problem-solving abilities required asrelated to various aspects of patient care.

  • Critical thinking skillsnecessary to exercise and to lead others in application of the nursingprocess.

  • Mobility and visual manualdexterity.

  • Physical stamina forfrequent walking, standing, lifting, and positioning of patients.

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:

  • UPMC approved nationalcertification preferred.

  • Current Pennsylvanialicensure as a Registered Professional Nurse.

  • CPR required based on AHAstandards that include both a didactic and skills demonstration componentwithin 30 days of hire

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) ORCardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)
