The ETS AI Research Labs is seeking a strategic leader with experience conducting agile research, driving innovation, and devising high-impact assessment and learning experiences to act as Director, Learning Science & Design in the AI Research Laboratory at ETS. The AI Research Laboratory is made up of a team of learning scientists, instructional designers, research scientists, engineers, user research specialists, data scientists and product owners. The Lab develops solutions built on a foundation of learning and cognitive science principles and leverages interactive task design, machine learning, and data sciences to create effective and efficient learning solutions.
The Director, Learning Science & Design will lead a team of Learning Scientists and Instructional Designers who support the development of prototypes and product concepts including progressive personal profiles to inform alerts, nudges, and interventions; personalized diagnostics, assessments and dashboards; online and in-class interventions; and personalized and adaptive pathways for K-20 and the workforce.
The successful Director, Learning Science & Design candidate will lead a team that (a) implements user-centered design (UCD), learning science principles (LSP), and learning design principles (LDP), (b) develops context-specific learner objectives and frameworks (c) works collaboratively with scientists, developers, and product owners to apply the LSPs and LDPs.
BASIC FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Lead on the application of learning science principles and learning design principles to prototypes and product concepts developed in the AI Research Lab.
Oversee the development of assessment-for-learning models and support the application of these models to the development of prototypes and product concepts.
Work with research scientists, engineers, software developers, and product owners in agile teams to support the efficient and effective development of product concepts and prototypes.
Conduct applied research on the intersection between best practice pedagogical principles and the practical needs of educators and learners to connect theory and practice and apply this research to the development of technology-enhanced solutions.
Staying abreast of emerging technology developments, potential pedagogical applications, and associated educational research.
Communicate findings from research and development efforts with broad audiences.
Experience and Skills
A Masters or PhD in learning engineering, design, instructional design, or related area
At least 10 years of experience applying learning science and design principles to the development of technology enhanced teaching and learning solutions
At least 6 years leading a team that conducted applied educational research and demonstrated experience applying findings from such research to the development of products and/or programs
Experience embedding data hooks to analyze instructional effectiveness
Experience engaging with target market and user segments to understand their needs and aligning solutions with those needs
Ability to work collaboratively and effectively in agile teams
Ability to work collaboratively and effectively with cross-divisional stakeholder groups
Strong oral and written communication skills
