Where the Chemistry Happens…

The I&E Discipline Engineer (Canada Region - Instrumentation & Electrical Engineer) leads and provides technical support to BASF’s Canadian region sites for Capital and Operational expenditure projects. Also responsible for technical site support including but not limited to meeting local regulations & BASF compliance in terms of instrumentation & electricals requirements. This includes interaction with other sites and North American personnel to review, validate, and provide feedback on new and revised BASF Technical Standards. The I&E Engineer will assure proper design, procurement, and construction of capital and operational expense projects, usually <$15M, per regulatory and BASF standards.

Added knowledge and experience of Instrumentation & Controls engineering in terms of conception, design, execution and management of 3rd party engineering partners within I&C is preferred. Specifying and troubleshoot programmable logic controllers (PLC) and ability to support serial communication and interfacing, industrial field bus networks, the Purdue model – ISA 99 and OPC standards is advantageous.

Formula for Success: You Will…

  • Design and develop instrumentation and process control systems for chemical facilities. This includes the specification of industrial instrumentation including the material to support installation, cost estimates, quantity takeoffs and manpower requirements for proposals, forecasts and change orders.

  • Providing engineering support for existing control systems including the preparation and/or modification of control system programs, instrument drawings, data sheets, I/O wiring diagrams, P&IDs, control system specifications, field instrument specifications, calculations, charts and graphs.

  • Good knowledge of DCS automation and process controls and PLC programming

  • Specifies electrical equipment and materials

  • Identifies and recommends changes in existing electrical power system, suggests changes in plans to meet operational or department requirements, regulations and improvements

  • Directly supports capital projects by specifying, accepting and overseeing installation of electrical equipment

  • Develops Instrument and Electrical scope of work for contractors

  • Develops Instrument and Electrical design basis documents for projects

  • Provides functional leadership for engineering contractor working on a capital project

  • Your strong commitment to workplace safety will be evident as you understand local and national safety standards and collaborate in hazard risk analysis and safety assessments

  • Leveraging your education and experience in Electrical Engineering or a related engineering discipline, you will demonstrate your understanding of typical process control techniques such as PID, cascaded master/slave, split range, providing technical direction, advice and consultancy support on instrumentation, controls related topics

  • Relying on your experience with control panel layout and design, you will specify instruments and instrument requirements for equipment

  • Demonstrating your in-depth technical experience in process instrumentation and controls, including familiarity with pressure, temperature, level, flow and process analyzers measurement technology, you will maintain instrumentation, functional design specifications / documents and P&I diagrams

  • Utilizing your proven experience in designing, implementing, programming and commissioning PLC, and Building Management Systems (BMS) control systems, you will be responsible for the interpretation and adherence to BASF Technical Standards, industry standards, and applicable regulatory and design codes, as applicable to specific projects.

Ingredients for Success: What We Look for in You…

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Electrical & Instrumentation Engineering, with 6 – 8 or more years of engineering experience in a chemical / petrochemical or similar manufacturing environment

  • P.Eng : Electrical Engineering, qualification

  • Good knowledge of DCS automation and process controls

  • Detailed knowledge of Electrical Area Classification CEC ( Canadian Electrical code ) NFPA ( National Fire Prevention Association), IEEE ( Institute Electrical & Electronics Engineer ) & OHSA ( Ontario Health & Safety Act ) standards in chemical manufacturing or a similar industrial operation

  • Availability for approx..60% regular travel schedule to support the business

  • Very strong customer focus capabilities to closely interact with multiple organizational levels

  • Demonstrated work experience in project execution

  • Must have generic competencies of analytical thinking, communication and interpersonal understanding, initiative, team working and team leadership, and quality orientation/attention to detail.
